The world of aqua feed is constantly evolving. New feed additives like enzymes, probiotics, attractants are discovered to improve animal growth or to solve feed related problems. Also the quest to find suitable replacements for fish meal, both for financial and ecological reasons, remains an important research matter.

VDS keeps track of these new findings and selects the products that we believe are useful for aquaculture. Next to field trials, we have now the opportunity to test new concentrates, products and raw materials in our new research facility.

The test unit consists of 10 culture tanks with a total volume of 5 m3. The filtration system is a combination of mechanical filtration by screens and biological filtration with a moving bed bioreactor. The system is equipped to grow both marine and freshwater species. Our ecological foot print is minimised through the use of waste heat as source of energy for the system. The installation of solar panels is planned for end 2009, making our test unit 100% energy independent.

During 2008 we cultured Hybrid striped bass in our unit, (Morone saxatilis x Morone chrysops). The feed was administered in each tank via belt feeder with a 12 hour timer. The fish were fed 4 times per day of which 1 hand feeding to observe fish behaviour. The light period was 14 hours.

Follow the link to a summary of the culture parameters and results of the test.
